Valentine's Day gifts from the Disney universe

Posted on 18:31 by john mical
Do you want to show your favorite Disney fan that you love him or her to infinity ... and beyond? We have a few ideas from the shelves of the Disney store.

Gifts for women

Jewelry, of course: Personally, I'm always on the lookout for Disney jewelry I can wear to work. My favorite piece is a charm bracelet with a single Mickey silhouette dangling from it. Unfortunately, it's no longer in the Disney store. But a bracelet is still a good idea, so take a look at this silver Swirl Mickey Mouse bracelet ($225). If you're leaning more toward a necklace, Disney recently introduced a marcasite necklace by Judith Jack ($200, pictured). This necklace has a 14-inch chain, which is on the short side, so keep that in mind. Shooting for the moon? Take a look at the Disney Dream Collection, which prices starting around $1,000.

It's in the bag: Mickey and Minnie's love story is celebrated with a new line of LeSportsac bags, from makeup bags and wallets to weekender bags ($28-$138). Each Love Mickey bag comes with a sweet Mickey and Minnie keychain. If you've got a Disney vacation coming up, I recommend the Kasey Bag, a crossbody bag with lots of pockets. This style is perfect for a day at the parks because you can fit all your necessities in it and not have to worry much about carrying it.

Collectibles: Let one of Disney's beloved characters say "I love you" on Valentine's Day. Precious Moments has charming figurines of Piglet ($39.50) and Tigger ($46.50) that aren't nearly as twee as some Precious Moments can be. And if you're a fan of Jim Shore's work -- honestly, even if you're not -- any one of these would be welcome: Mickey or Minnie ($24.50 each) or Eeyore ($37.50, pictured). Or, get a little creative and celebrate one of the greatest love stories of all time with Kermit and Miss Piggy bookends ($79.50).

Disney duds: There are lots of love-themed duds for the ladies, starting with a sweet Mickey loves Minnie T-shirt or one featuring Jack and Sally from "Nightmare Before Christmas" ($19.50). If comfort is her thing, these cute  thermal sleep pants ($24.50) say "you don't need to wear uncomfortable lingerie to be sexy." (No, really, that's what they're saying. You have to listen closely.)

Champagne glasses: You don't have to wait for a wedding to buy her a nice set of Disney glasses. Beauty and the Beast are etched into these flutes ($79.95) from Arribas Bros., they can be personalized -- and there isn't a bridal veil in sight.

Gifts for men

We all know it's harder to buy romantic gifts for men. Even the Disney Store only offers three ideas for men on its Valentine's Day page: a classic Mickey T-shirt, a water bottle and a Vinylmation Cupid. I think we can do better. (No sexism intended: These might make great gifts for women, too, but since we're low on ideas for the men, we've put them here.)

A sporty watch: Granted, a lot of people don't wear watches anymore, so think of this more as jewelry for men. We found a red Timex Mickey Mouse Chronograph ($165) with a nylon band and a classic almost-hidden Mickey on the face. Looking for something more office-friendly? How about stainless steel with a black or blue face -- and your choice of character ($95). You also can have this watch engraved, but you might not get it in time for Valentine's Day.

Real jewelry: If you just found yourself saying, "To heck with something that's practically jewelry, how about the real thing?" there's a personalizable Disney ring from Jostens, maker of class rings for generations ($415-$710). And, not to let the ladies have all the fun, there's also a Diamond Icon Mickey Mouse Ring that starts at about $3,000. Of course Disney's universe goes far beyond Mickey Mouse, so how about these Wolverine cufflinks ($29.50)?

Design an iPad or iPhone case: Take his favorite movie and add a message or a favorite quote and you've got a personal -- and practical -- gift. Maybe an image from "Nightmare Before Christmas" with the quote, "We're simply meant to be." Prices range from about $40 for an iPhone 4/4S case to $56 for an iPad 3 case. Helpful hint: Nothing too schmoopy or your guy might be too humiliated to use his device in public.

Car decal: For those of you who don't really want to buy into the Valentine's Industrial Complex, but also don't want to go to dinner empty-handed, we like this "My other car is a Monorail" decal ($7.95).

Disney duds: If you think Valentine's Day is for sexy lingerie, consider these sassy Mickey Mouse lounge pants ($34.95) or these turkey leg boxes shorts ($19.95). Thinking of something more traditional? How about a Dumbo T-shirt ($11.99) to let him know he's "fly"?
