The Tour de Turtles is a sea turtle migration-tracking event lasting 92 days and using satellites to track the turtles. The Sea Turtle Conservancy sponsors this annual event to to teach people about sea turtles as well as threats to turtles. During the marathon each turtle represents a “cause or threat” to their survival.
Each of the 13 turtles participating is sponsored by a variety of companies. The Tour de Turtles website has information on al the turtles, let's you track the turtles, has general information about seat turtles, as well as some games.
Leading the pack of turtles on the migration marathon is Karma, an adult female leatherback turtle, sponsored by RFQ-hub (Request-For-Quote hub), a software developer. The turtle has traveled 1,132 miles so far.
The two turtles sponsored by Disney -- Peach and Pearl -- are in fourth and fifth places, respectively.
Peach, which is sponsored by Disney’s Animal Programs and Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, has traveled 553 miles so far. Peach represents the threat of light pollution. Sea turtle hatchlings rely on moonlight to find their way to the ocean, but many become disoriented and are drawn off-course by artificial light sources. If you've ever been to Vero Beach, you might have seen resorts ask that you keep your curtains drawn so as not to confuse the turtles.
Pearl, which is sponsored by the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund and Disney’s Friends for Change, has traveled 493 miles. It represents entanglement effects caused by pollution, fishing lines and fishing nets.
And if you haven't figured it out yet, the two names come from the movie “Finding Nemo.” Peach is a starfish and Pearl is an octopus.
You can track the turtles yourself, here.
More updates to come.
