Disney to make standalone Star Wars movies

Posted on 07:05 by john mical
Taking a page out of the Marvel playbook, Disney is planning to expand the Star Wars universe with additional spin off films to go with the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII, Disney announced.

"We are in development of a few standalone films that are not part of the Star Wars saga," Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, revealed during a call to investors "There are now creative entities working on developing scripts for what would be those standalone films."

Lawrence Kasdan, screenwriter of "The Empire Strikes Back," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and co-writer of "Return of the Jedi" while the other will be penned by Simon Kinberg, writer of "Sherlock Holmes" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith."

When exploring the acquisition of Lucasfilm the "idea of producing new standalone films came up and we discussed, not in great detail some of the possibilities," Iger said during the call. "Those possibilities are becoming more real with creative entities creating the scripts."

The movies will be separate from the upcoming Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, on which Kasdan and Kinberg are also consulting, and are expected to be released sometime after Episode VII, according to the Star Wars website. "Each standalone film will focus on a specific character, and two spin off films are currently confirmed," the website stated.

Smile of The Day: Owl in Flight

Posted on 06:40 by john mical
You don't need to be a wildlife photographer to get good photos of wildlife in Disney World. In most cases it's a matter of being prepared and having your camera ready.

The Flights of Wonder Show in the Animal Kingdom is always a good spot to get the birds flying around. It's a matter of having a fast shutter speed (put your camera on action mode), pan as the birds fly and keep your finger down on the shutter release. You never know what you might capture, such as this owl in flight.

'Wreck-It Ralph' wins big at the Annie Awards

Posted on 13:07 by john mical
Disney's "Wreck-It Ralph" was a big winner Saturday night at the 40th Annie Awards recognizing excellence in all things animated, from feature films to affects in live action movies.

The movie's wins included:
  • Best animated feature of 2012
  • Rich Moore as best director
  • Alan Tudyk for voice acting in an animated feature (King Candy)
  • Phil Johnston and Jennifer Lee for writing
This is the first best feature win for Disney -- not Pixar -- since 1998, when "Mulan" took the top prize, Indiewire reports.

The short film that played before "Ralph" also was a winner: "The Paperman" took the award for best animated short subject. Incidentally, "The Paperman" debuted online this week; you can see it below.

"Ralph" stomped all over Disney-Pixar's "Brave," which also was nominated for best animated feature, along with "Frankenweenie," "ParaNorman," "Hotel Transylvania," "Rise of the Guardians," "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" and "The Rabbi's Cat."

"Brave" wasn't completely shut out; the film won awards for production design and for editorial content in an animated feature.

The L.A. Times has a complete list of nominees and winners.
